Abstract

Learning style is the preferred way of students in receiving, understanding and managing information effectively and efficiently. There are three models of learning styles, namely visual learning style (learning by way of seeing), auditory (learning by dominance of hearing) and kinesthetic (learning by dominating how to move, work and touch). The results of observations at SMA Negeri 4 Padang show that student learning outcomes are still relatively low and each student does not understand their learning style (modality). This can cause the learning styles of students to be out of sync with the models, methods or learning media used by the teacher, causing low cognitive competence of students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between learning styles and cognitive competence of students.


This research is a descriptive study that was conducted in October in class XI MIPA SMA Negeri 4 Padang. The sampling technique was Cluster Random Sampling, by drawing two classes, namely class XI MIPA 4 and XI MIPA 7. The sample consisted of 75 students who were in two classes. In the results of the study, normality tests were carried out for the data on the results of the questionnaire and the results of the students' UTS. Data analysis in this study used the Pearson Product Moment correlation formula. Furthermore, the correlation significance test was carried out using the t formula.


Based on the research that has been done, it is found that the relationship between learning styles and students' cognitive competencies is not significant and the correlation value is in the very low to low category.
