Abstract

Biology learning in high school emphasizes on developing the potential of students to become independent students, so that they have critical, creative thinking skills and are able to solve problems (problem solving) they face. However, this capability is still low and needs to be improved. Related to this, this study aims to analyze the need for developing teaching materials in the form of problem solving-based modules to improve students' critical thinking skills. This study used a survey method through questionnaires to 40 students of class X as observers and interviews with one biology teacher at SMA Negeri 1 Baso. The results of the questionnaire showed that students had difficulties in understanding Biology, especially in protist material because of the abstract material objects and the lack of availability of teaching materials that attracted students' attention and interest in learning. The development of problem solving-based modules can be a solution to the problems faced by teachers and students, especially on protist material.
