Abstract

Learning activities do not only involve teachers and students, but also involve teaching materials that will be used in the learning. After the entry of the COVID-19 pandemic into Indonesia, most learning activities were replaced with an online system, which demanded that students be more independent, and teachers were more careful in choosing teaching materials. One of the teaching materials that builds the learning independence of students, and makes it easier for teachers to foster learning is a smartphone-based e-module. This study aims to analyze the needs related to the development of smartphone-based biology e-module teaching materials on animal tissue materials. This study used a survey method through a questionnaire to 40 students of XI grade and one biology teacher at SMAN 12 Padang. The results of the questionnaire showed that students tended to like multimedia-type non-printed teaching materials, spent ≥ 5 hours per day using smartphones, and had difficulty understanding biology learning materials, especially animal tissue materials. The development of this smartphone-based learning e-module can be a solution to the problems that are being faced by teachers and students in learning.
